January 2012
We are delighted to announce that the final total raised by Angel Day Nursery for Children in Need was...
£1115.98
A lot of fun was had over our fund raising week and we would like to thank everyone who helped us raise such good amount for this worthy cause.
BRISTOL STANDARDS
We are embarking on the journey to gain the Bristol Standard Quality Assurance accreditation.
The Bristol Standard is a self-evaluation framework that supports all settings to develop and improve the quality and effectiveness of their provision. It is an annual cycle of reflection which is ongoing, using a whole team approach. It involves practitioners working together, to reflect on their practice, in order to improve outcomes for all children and their families.
It will take a year to complete, however we believe it will have a positive impact on the quality of the setting and are very excited about the journey it promises to take us on.

Baby Sign Language at Angels
The whole Angel Team recently attended a baby sign language workshop. For many of us it was an opportunity to revise and develop the signing we had already learned from the course we took in 2010 and for the rest it was a positive introduction into signing for children.
The workshop has given us the encouragement to use signing positively at nursery and we also learned some fun new songs to sign along to. Successful signing takes practice for both adults and children and hopefully your children will bring some of these songs and signs home in due course…
What is baby signing and how will it benefit my child?
Baby Signing is the use of simple signs and gestures with babies and young children in order to help them communicate before they can talk.
Research has shown that using signs can help to develop your child’s language skills. Babies taught baby signs often learn to speak sooner and have richer vocabularies than non-signing babies. Baby signs can also alleviate a baby’s frustration and avoids the need for the baby to be totally dependant on pointing or crying to communicate their needs. Using signs will also help to boost self-esteem and can enrich interactions between the children and their carers at nursery.

Update: 8.00pm Sunday 19th December 2010
The "Big Freeze" is here again and is set to continue, but I am keen to offer nursery services to those that need it. We have, therefore, made the decision to open Angel Day Nursery as normal on Monday 20th December; however the number of places available will be dependant on the staffing levels.
I will take a view on the conditions on Monday and it may be that we close early in order to ensure safer travel home.
If you do not need your place, please would you let us know as soon as possible so that we have a realistic idea of the numbers we will need to cater for. Please consider whether your journey is necessary in these icy conditions, especially if you have children in the car with you. Keep warm and stay safe.

We are planning to open as normal tomorrow, providing there is no change on the weather front overnight. Thank you all for bearing with us in the extreme circumstances last week. I trust you and the children managed to take some pleasure from the snow and please do bring in your snowy photos to share.

Angel Day Nursery will be open today from 9am - 4pm. Please travel safely.
Update: 7.30am Thursday 7th January 2010
The "Big Freeze" continues but I am keen to offer nursery services to those that need it. I have made the decision to open from 9am to 4pm today, however the number of places available will be dependant on the staffing levels.
Opening late and closing early will allow extra time for safe travel for all.
If you do not need your place today, please would you let us know as soon as possible so that we have a realistic idea of numbers we will need to cater for.
Please consider whether your journey is necessary in these icy conditions, especially if you have children in the car with you. Keep warm and stay safe.
Update: 8.45pm Wednesday 6th January 2010
It is impossible to make a decision about the opening of the nursery tomorrow without knowing what weather conditions the night will bring, however, providing there is not another heavy snowfall I would like to try and open for business as usual. Having said this, the number of children we can cater for may be restricted due to staffing, if those living in the outlying rural areas are not able to make it to work.
It will be difficult for us to prioritise the places we offer, therefore if your child is booked in for Thursday and you do not need the place please would you be kind enough to text Hayley on 07790 908754 and let her know.
I will update the website again in the morning as soon as I am able to establish the situation. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
7.30am Wednesday 6th January 2010

5TH JANURARY 2010

Please note that based on the weather and the amount of snow that has fallen today I have made the decision to close the nursery early today to ensure that all staff and children have a fair chance of getting home safely before the conditions worsen.
If you have children at nursery this afternoon, please can you make arrangements for them to be collected by 3pm.
I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but I hope that you understand that I have the welfare of all achildren and my staff to consider.
Enjoy the rest of the snow and we look forward to seeing your snowy photo's.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!
Whilst I think we can all agree there is something magical about the snow it does create some problems! In the bad weather, or more specifically the snow, I will endeavour to keep Angels open and operating as normal. However, as a number of the team either live outside Cheltenham or rely on public transport, the normal running of the nursery will depend on staff being able to get to work and for satisfactory staff:child ratios to be maintained.
So far I have to credit the team for their efforts in getting into nursery in the conditions out there, and I am obviously conscious of their safety and well being in these extreme weather conditions.
IF THE NURSERY HAS TO CLOSE WE WILL UPDATE THE WEBSITE AND CONTACT EACH FAMILY BY TELEPHONE INFORMING YOU OF THE SITUATION.
If the nursery is limited to the number of children, due to staff shortages, I will have to limit the admissions. In this instance it is very difficult for us to decide who needs the places more than others, so can I ask that if you do not absolutely need your nursery place on that day would you please lets us know. We can then keep that space for those who need it and will, of course, offer you a swap or a refund.
Finally, if the weather conditions worsen throughout the day we may take the decision to close early in order to ensure the staff have a fair chance of getting home safe and sound in poor conditions. If this is the case we will contact you as early as possible to give you time to arrange for early collection of your child.
Many thanks, wrap up warm and enjoy the snow. Tracey

SWINE FLU UPDATE
The World Health Organization has now increased its human influenza pandemic alert level to phase 6 declaring a Pandemic. To spend more time and energy treating the increasing numbers who have the virus, the government has decided to move from containment and outbreak management policies to the treatment phase.
This means that:
* GPs will be able to diagnose swine flu on the basis of symptoms rather than waiting for laboratory testing
* all tracing of people who have been in contact with a sufferer will stop
* people who may have been exposed to the virus will not be given anti-viral drugs
* anyone who is diagnosed with swine flu will continue to be offered anti-virals until further notice
Advice from NHS Gloucestershire :
"As we approach the summer holidays parents should encourage their children to continue maintaining good hygiene. Schools have been encouraging children to wash their hands and to follow the Catch It, Bin It, Kill It advice. Parents should continue with this while children are at home or on holiday.
"If you or your child experiences flu-like symptoms you should check you symptoms using the online flu checker at www.nhs.uk or by calling the National Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513 513.
"If after checking your symptoms you think have swine flu, please stay at home and contact your GP by telephone. Your GP/NHS Direct will advise you if antivirals are required and where these can be collected from.
"If you are on holiday in the UK you should call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 instead of your GP. NHS Direct can advise what you should do in the area you are staying. Please do not go to a local A&E or MIU."
NHS Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire County Council are closely working together in implementing the current national policy and advice regarding schools/nurseries. In line with Government guidance, school closures are not necessary as we move from containment to treatment.
Please remember to maintain good hygiene practice and encourage this with your children
We will continue to maintain or good hygiene practices at nursery and will send any sick children home in accordance with our illness policy. You all know your children better than anyone and if you think that they are poorly, please keep them at home, check their symptoms with your GP or health visitor and only bring them back to nursery if they are well enough to be here and do not pose a health threat to others.

HUMAN INFLUENZA PANDEMIC
The World Health Organization increased its human influenza pandemic alert level to 5 on 29 April. Although there are as yet only small numbers of confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK, we need to prepare for the possibility of more cases here over the coming weeks and months.
More investigation is needed to determine the severity of the disease and the ease with which it can spread. We therefore do not yet know how serious the pandemic will be in the UK. It could be relatively mild.
At this stage, therefore, all schools, early years and group childcare settings have been advised to operate as normal and Angel Day Nursery will continue to do so unless advised otherwise, for any reason.
What you should do now?
* Help us by making sure we have up to date contact details for you: your address, telephone numbers (home, work and mobile) and e-mail as appropriate.
* Teach and encourage your children to:
o wash their hands using soap and water
o cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing - using a tissue is good
o throw dirty tissues away quickly into bins
* If your child is unwell and should not be at nursery, please make alternative arrangements for their care having consideration for other children and staff and the spread of infection.

Job Opportunities - September 2008
We are currently recruiting for 2 full time Nursery Nurses. Ideally you should have an NVQ Level 3 in Childcare and some practical experience of working with children. If you are interested in applying please contact Hayley Jacobs, Nursery Manager on 01242 574093 or email hayley@angeldaynursery.co.uk.
September 2008 Newsletter
Well I survived my first school summer holiday and we did, in all, have a great time, we did some exciting day trips, watched far too much telly and once or twice we even managed to enjoy the paddling pool. However, for some bizarre reason I was under the illusion that I was on holiday for 6 weeks too...oh how wrong was I!! I came to work for a rest and took advantage of being able to work longer hours without having to rush off to collect Harriet from school.
I hope you have all been enjoying the Great British Summer! I took down the notice asking for you to bring in sun cream for the children, as I stood on the doorstep in the rain! The weather may have been unpredictable and the need for sun cream limited but it has not stopped us enjoying the outdoors at nursery, and the warmth and the rain certainly helped pre-school's potatoes and tomatoes grow. Yum Yum.
This is always a sad time of year for me when we say goodbye to all those children leaving to go to school. They are all terribly excited about it and definitely ready for the next stage so we wish them all the best of luck at their new schools and hope they continue to learn and thrive.
British Beef Back on the Menu...
I have made the decision to re-introduce beef to our menu at Angels. We use a local butcher who supplies meat reared in the Cotswolds. This will take effect from October 2008, please let us know if your child should not eat beef for any reason so we can cater for their individual needs.
Place Availability...
Once again this year our place availability across the whole nursery is somewhat limited. Please let us know well in advance regarding changes to sessions or extra sessions required.
Speak to Hayley for availability & reservation forms.
Staff Changes - September 2008
Emma: We are delighted to welcome Emma back to work part time. Emma left us to have her daughter and is now, like many of us balancing work and motherhood! Welcome Back
Nicki: Has joined us in Red Group to replace Hollie. Nicki has successfully completed her Level 3 in Childcare at college and this is her first full time job. She has high aspirations and we look forward to seeing her blossom at Angels. Welcome Nicki.
Nicole: Nicole has joined us to cover Vicky's Maternity Leave. She has a 2:1 Degree in Creative Writing and plans to go into teaching in the future, so is gaining some valuable experience with the Early Years. Welcome!
Philippa will be starting a 2 year Foundation Degree in Early Years from September. This will take her away from the nursery on Fridays during term time, however this a very exciting opportunity and we all look forward to benefiting from her extended professional knowledge.
Mari: Mari returned to Angels over the summer to work whilst awaiting a full time nursing position. She has now started her new job and we would like to wish her luck in her new career.
Hollie: Red Group: Hollie has recently completed her NVQ 2 in Childcare and Early Years. She has always wanted to pursue a career in teaching, and to this end has secured a job as a Teaching Assistant. We wish Hollie the best of luck and look forward to seeing her in the holidays as bank staff
Vicky: Red Group: We would like to congratulate Vicky who is expecting TWINS, due in December. However, due to pregnancy related complications she has been signed off work indefinitely. We wish her the best of luck with the rest of her pregnancy.

NURSERY RE-OPENS MONDAY 6TH AUGUST 2007
Angel Day Nursery will be open again on Monday 6th August.
As you will all understand, it was impossible for us to function without running water at the premises and as we are responsible for one of the vulnerable groups (babies and pre-school children) this closure was endorsed by the Environmental Health Officer. It has been a difficult period for us all, and for some of you I know it will have also been inconvenient. I thank you for your understanding during this period and I am looking forward to the nursery getting back to normal as soon as possible.
From Monday we are able to put our action plan to work and will be able to offer you your normal nursery sessions with snack, cooked lunch and tea (whichever apply to your sessions). We will continue to provide safe drinking water and milk for the children throughout the day.
If at any point we are unable to source enough safe water to function I reserve the right to close again until the water returns to normal from the mains supply.
Once again I thank you for your understanding during this period and we look forward to seeing everyone back at nursery next week.
Updated 2nd August 2007. Tracey Thompson
31st July 2007
PLANS TO REOPEN
We now have running water, but our Environmental Health Officer has issued very strict guidelines under which we can operate. With this in mind we are currently readdressing our procedures to enable us to operate to a standard that minimises any risk to your children.
The water is currently only to be used for flushing toilets and doing laundry, and as you will appreciate there are many other water needs throughout the day at nursery. We need to consider how we can provide enough safe and suitable water for these needs.
We are also considering how we can provide cooked meals for the children to avoid having to ask you to provide packed lunches.
Once we have our action plan approved by the EHO we will be in a position to re-open.
All parents will be contacted about the reopening and the agreed practices we are going to operate under. It has been a difficult 10 days for everyone affected by this crisis and we thank you for your continued understanding.

30th July 2007
NURSERY REMAINS CLOSED
Angel Day Nursery remains closed due to the lack of running water as a result of the flood crisis in Gloucestershire.
Closure of the nursery has been endorsed by the Health and Safety/Environmental Health Officer, and as we care for one of the vounerable groups (babies and pre-school children) we will be considering the conditions under which we reopen very seriously.
We are assessing the situation on a daily basis and are keen to reopen as soon as possible. However, we are being very careful to ensure any risk to the children and staff from contaminated water is minimised. Due to the amount of water needed and the high level of contact with water throughout the day we are considering the risk of opening with the temporary water supply.
All parents will be kept fully informed of the nursery situation with as much notice as possible.
We thank you for your continued understanding in this matter and look forward to getting back to normal as quickly as possible.

25th July 2007
NURSERY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Due to the unforseen circumstances we are facing, with no running water, Angel Day Nursery will be closed until further notice. Without running water for drinking and hygeine facilities we are unable to operate.
We will be contacting all parents when we re-open and thank you for your understaning in this matter.
Any credits due for the closed period will be issued on September invoices once we have been able to assess and calculate the exact extent of the closuure period.
If you need to contact us, the nursery phone line has been diverted to Hayley.

Nusery Photos
The photographer will be at nursery on TUESDAY 21st NOVEMBER. If you would like your child to have their photo taken and they do not normally attend on a Tuesday, please bring them along before 10.30am.
Staff Changes at Angel Day Nursery...
Over the past few months we have had a number of staff changes, mainly due to maternity leave, they are as follow:
Hollie was on maternity leave, however, since having Millie Rae she has decided not to return to Angels and we wish her the best of luck as a new mum. Natalie is on maternity leave and following the birth of Jacob, she is still deciding what to do about work and family life and enjoying her leave in the mean time. Gemma has left Angels to look for a career change, not a decision she made easily and we wish her the best of luck.
NEW RECRUITS!! Philippa has been working with us on a temporary basis since January and is now a permanent member of the team working across Red Group and Pre School. Vicky and Hollie J are our two new trainees working in Red Group studying their NVQ level 2.
We are very pleased with our new recruits and feel that they have already made a positive contribution to the team and that we continue to provide high quality care to the children at Angels, even in the face of staff changes.
Winter Clothes / Spare Clothes
Please ensure children have a spare set of clothes in case of accidents and suitable outdoor clothing so we are still able to enjoy the park and garden during the colder months. Wellingtons are a good idea, as the garden can get fairly muddy.
Please ensure all your child's clothing is clearly labelled to avoid items being lost.
Place Availability
Along with our news about pregnancies, we would like to congratulate all of you who have recently had babies and who are expecting.
We would also like to remind you that our place availability across the whole nursery is somewhat limited, especially up to September 2007, and places are being booked up well in advance. Please book places for your new additions now to avoid disappointment. You are better to book and not use all the sessions than not book at all. I have only just managed to get a space for number 3!!
Speak to Hayley for availability & reservation forms.
Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs
Following the success of the Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers, we are now collecting the Tesco Sport vouchers. Please deposit your vouchers in the collection box underneath the main notice board in the entrance hall. THANK YOU
CAR PARKING
I know that the car parking outside nursery is limited, and by no means ideal. However I have received a couple of complaints from other road users over the past few weeks. Please can I ask parents, dropping off or collecting children by car, to be respectful of local residents and other road users when parking.
The access space outside the nursery side gates can be used for dropping off and collecting, however we need to keep it clear throughout the day for deliveries and visitors. Thank You.
CHRISTMAS IS COMING...
Christmas comes at the same time every year and each time we are taken by surprise at how quickly it is upon us. Here are some dates for your diary to help with your Christmas planning...
Tuesday 12th & Wednesday 13th December: Christmas Concerts
Friday 22nd December: Nursery closing at 4pm
Monday 25th - Friday 29th December: Nursery Closed
Monday 1st January: Nursery Closed
Tuesday 2nd January: Nursery Open as usual
